School Violence Continues

s students crying and consoling each other after a school shooting

The media has been broadcasting information about the shooting rampage at Northern Illinois University at Dekalb. Thus far, the death toll is at 6, including the gunman who killed himself. It turns out that the gunman was a former graduate student at the school but had transferred elsewhere. We’ll probably never know the full reason for the shootings, or if they are even related to his transfer.

Many students were shot and two of those remain in critical condition at this time.

Immediately after the shootings, debate started again about the pros and cons of gun control. This is an issue that will be argued about for some time in the future. Reminders about the slayings at Virginia Tech are reviewed in the news, along with the NIU story.

But what about helping students feel safe attending school?

Violence in schools has been with us for some time, and growing worse. But I did find a blog produced by the County of Burlington, New Jersey, entitled Healthy Adolescent Program, with some simple, yet excellent facts, warning signs and steps to take.
