Education Report Card: Problems with Reading

Yesterday I presented the National Report Card - Math, along with a colored map of the various states with improvements in the math scores of 4th and 8th grade students. Those results were pathetic! Exactly the type of report card no child wants to take home.
But the Reading Report Card is MUCH WORSE!!
Compared with 2005,
- ONLY 4 states and jurisdictions (District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, and Maryland) improved at both grades
- 13 states (Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming) and Department of Defense schools improved at grade 4 only
- 2 states (Texas and Vermont) improved at grade 8 only
- 2 states declined at grade 8 (North Dakota and Rhode Island)
- 30 states showed no significant change at either grade
(Data taken from Executive Summary - Reading)
JUST TO CLARIFY: any gains made were across the board, with white, black, and Hispanic students in both grades making those gains. Probably not surprisingly, female students outperformed males.
Looking at the National Report Cards for Math and Reading, there is little to be optimistic about, unless change occurs in our public schools.
As Don Kingsland states in Set Our Teachers FREE! A Plan to Save Public Education,
“Unfortunately, whether a child seems to have an early aptitude for any subject from Art to Math to Science, without reading skills they can only advance to a certain level, and no farther. For example, what happens to that young math whiz when presented with word problems?”
“We will have NO great scientists or mathematicians in the future, if our youngsters don’t learn to read EFFECTIVELY NOW!”
“. . . And remember, reading mastery involves BOTH reading fluency AND comprehension.”
The results of THE NATIONAL REPORT CARD are a disgrace! It’s obvious that our students and our schools need all the help they can get. It’s also obvious that attempts through NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND and other current programs are not working!
With politicians and bureaucrats too busy with the Presidential elections to interfere, this is the perfect time for parents, teachers, taxpayers and other concerned citizens to get momentum going to make needed changes in education.
