Political Squabbling! Students Lose Again!
As you probably already know, school issues are quieter during the summer. Most of the action takes place behind the scenes, as politicians argue over school budgets and proposals for the coming year.
In California, once again political squabbling has led to budget cuts that seriously impair the state school system’s ability to get an accurate handle on what is needed for assessment of what is working and what is ineffective in California’s curriculum.
In today’s edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Ed Mendel has posted an article about budget cuts to the state’s system for monitoring students. By the way, the system was already extremely under-funded and working on a shoe-string budget. It is an interesting article and I encourage you to read it.
But, since our emphasis is on improving public schools nationwide and decreasing the drop-out rate, one sentence particularly stood out to me.
“The Harvard study concluded that the high school dropout rate in California was 29 percent, much higher than the 13 percent rate being reported by the state at the time.”
What this means to those of us who are concerned about the horrible graduation statistics in our national public school system, is that the already dreadful percentages reported are probably under-inflated. If a populous state like California can under-report by 220%, what is happening in the rest of the nation?
Have things gotten bad enough that you want to take action to change things? Do you have any idea where to start so you can get accurate information for your school district? Would you be willing to help make US schools better for our students?
