The Baltimore Sun had an interesting article this morning about the failure of Maryland to turn around it’s worst schools after more than a decade of trying different techniques. The article deals with a report released by the Center on Education Policy, a Washington-based nonprofit education research group.

According to Jack Jennings, President of CEP:

“Even in an advanced state like Maryland, that has tried to deal with these problems for a decade . . . we just don’t know what to do.”

Can you see the steam coming off the top of my head?

The article talks about the different techniques that have been tried, like “turnaround specialists”, which have failed miserably. What really frustrates me is that the report seems to say that finding out what doesn’t work is ”progress”.

While there is much valuable information from the report, including findings about shortcomings in No Child Left Behind, there are no real answers other than, as Mr. Jennings is quoted as saying:

“. . . it is a long, hard slog to bring about change, and it is something we just have to keep working at.”

Since we don’t have the millions of dollars to promote the book or the plan, millions of dollars continue to be wasted by think tanks, focus groups and multi-million-dollar nonprofit groups trying to reinvent the wheel.

I have tried contacting several of these groups, as well as 2008 presidential candidates, but we are ignored. Seems no one wants a simple, workable plan, especially not a plan that is different than what they’ve already decided is the answer.
