Math Whiz?
The following is an excerpt from “Set Our Teachers FREE!” by Don Kingsland.
“Speaking of critical skills needed for living, Grades 1 to 3 is the time to begin drilling for Math mastery.”
“Over and over again, I heard students say, “I can’t do math!”, when what they really meant was that they did not have the basics memorized!”
“Yes, advanced math requires abstract and conceptual thinking. But there are basic fundamentals of mathematics that simply require repetition and memorization. These can be mastered by anyone who expends the effort to do the WORK necessary.”
“For too long, schools have been rewarding those who master math basics early, as if this was a skill only allowed to the few. But every student needs to have basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication answers stored in their brains, before advanced math concepts are presented.”
“Students AND parents need to be made aware that basic Math is simply a work assignment that can be mastered by ANY student, with the right amount of applied effort. It is imperative to eradicate this artificial Math Whiz vs. non-Math-proficient division that is so prevalent.”
“Any student with a normal intelligence can achieve total mastery of the basics if the right amount of effort is applied.”
“NOTE: It is important that parents be made aware of this information, especially those parents who may be, consciously or unconsciously, passing along their own math inadequacies and/or mystification. Math is not a mystifying subject that only a few geniuses can excel at, but it does require early effort.”
